Reading chapter 1 of the textbook recently was very interesting for me because it went directly against a lot of what was taught in my high school writing classes. My teachers used to emphasize that it was important to pick one side or the other when writing rather than forming your own opinion, which was really hard at times because of how difficult it could be to completely agree with either side of an issue. I am happy that college writing is centered around the idea that you're supposed to apply external information and use critical thinking and "knowledge-making" to form an opinion because it allows for a lot more freedom in my work/interpretations. A good application for this happens to be in dealing with the media today.
