Microtheme

The microtheme paper is way different that any other paper I've written before. The structure involves wandering around and speculating about a question you have but not directly answering it, which is really difficult because I'm used to writing essays by picking a view and sticking with it. I redid my rough draft multiple times because I kept having to change the question or seemed biased towards a specific viewpoint. Critical thinking is an important part of developing this assignment but too much of it makes it difficult to stay focused on the question posed at the start of the paper.

I eventually got a final rough draft in place after I reframed my question to be more neutral and took approaches from all sides of the question to develop my second paragraph. It was hard to fit all of these approaches into one page so I had to get rid of extra details that weren't having much effect. I have always been good at meeting minimum word counts in papers but getting under a maximum restriction is much more difficult.

This assignment relates a lot to chapter 1 because it is focused on knowledge-making - the process of analyzing a problem and thinking about it in lots of different contexts. I use a similar mindset when freewriting and it is helpful when solving problems and developing opinions. The theme of this course is about developing your own viewpoint and I think this microtheme project does a good job of teaching how to consider all views before deciding yours.

  1. Hi Matthew,
I totally agree that this micro theme paper is a little bit different, its somewhat out of my comfort zone when it comes to writing. Dancing around the problem is a lot different then what we normally do by answering the questions or problems given to us. I liked how you tied it back into chapter one with analyzing a problem.

  2. Hey Matthew,
I feel the same way about the microtheme. Having to go against everything i've learned about writing is weirdly challenging but I feel there is less stress since there is no necessary "format". The free form nature of the writing I feel helps the creative process.

Freshman Year Reflection

Going into my freshman year of college after graduating high school, I had a lot of uncertainties. People go in different directions after graduating and I wasn't sure if the path I was planning was sufficient compared to my peers.     Mainly, I wasn't sure if I was making the right decision by choosing North Central. Most of my friends chose to go to schools far from home for the "college experience"/partying, which is something I've never been into. I've always had the goal of graduating college debt-free, so I made sure to pick a school where I could commute and afford it without having to take out loans. After picking North Central, I was happy because it was a great school that I could afford and stay close to my family while attending, but other people didn't agree with my decision. I got made fun of by peers who expected me to go to an "elite" university because of my good grades and was told time and time again that I was going to m...

Deep Water Documentary

The film Deep Water tells the true story of Donald Crowhurst, a British man with no sailing experience, who enters a nonstop boat race around the world in 1968. The documentary mainly utilizes pathos to develop a sorrowful viewpoint regarding Crowhurst's mindset in competing in the race as well as how he "finishes" the race. 1.)  The scene that really got to me was when Crowhurst started faking his position in the race to the British media in order to give them hope that he was overcoming the odds against him when in reality he wasn't. This ended up crushing him because he created a false expectation for himself which ultimately drove him into insanity. This scene made me angry and sad because he started to lose his mind obsessing over the race and trying to cheat his way out and sad because he had a family at home and had completely disregarded them in order to try and prove that he could do the extreme. Essentially he was giving everyone (including himself) fals...
